    Social Media Marketing Top Seven
Amazon-exclusive content from author David Meerman Scott

Establishing a social media marketing strategy and creating effective Web content that is indexed by search engines is critical for any business. When people are looking for answers to problems, they go online first!

People and organizations that participate in social media (creating YouTube videos, participating on sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, starting a blog and the like) become part of a vibrant online community and show that market that they are worthy of doing business with.

Unlike non-targeted, in-your-face, interruption-based advertising, social media is content that people actually want to see. How cool is that? Rather than forcing you to convince people to pay attention to your products and services by dreaming up messages and ad campaigns, search engines deliver interested buyers right to your company’s virtual doorstep. This is a marketer’s dream-come-true.

However, most marketers don’t know how to harness this exciting form of marketing. Their most common mistake is to spend way too much time talking about your company’s products and services and worrying too much about being “on message.” In addition, many companies are fearful of jumping into the social media waters because it seems scary to put yourself out there.

Top Seven Ways to Get the Most Out of Social Networking Sites:
    1. Target a specific audience. Create a page that reaches an audience that is important to your organization. It is usually better to reach a small niche market than try to go large.

    2. Be a thought leader. Provide valuable and interesting information that people want to check out. It is better to show your expertise in a market or at solving a buyer’s problems than to blather on about your product.

    3. Create lots of links. Link to your own sites and blog, and those of others in your industry and network. Everybody loves links—it makes the Web what it is. You should certainly link to your own stuff from a social networking site (like your blog), but also link to other people’s sites and content in your own market.

    4. Encourage people to contact you. Make it easy for people to reach you online, and be sure to follow up personally on your fan mail.

    5. Participate. Create groups and participate in online discussions. Become an online leader and organizer.

    6. Make it easy to find you. Tag your page and add your page into the subject directories. Encourage others to bookmark your page with del.icio.us and DIGG.

    7. Experiment. These sites are great because you can try new things. If it isn’t working, tweak it. Or abandon the effort and try something new. There is no such thing as an expert in social networking—we’re all learning as we go!

The following is a list of benefits that businesses can get from SEO:

    * Get more targeted traffic. SEO can increase the number of visitors to your site who are actively searching for your product or service.

The SEO Gameplan - Your Body Text

Just because SEO or search engine optimization is the process of getting or making sure your website content is relevant to the search phrase or keywords you are targetting, it follows that a lot of it will be heavily reliant on the actual text or copy you write on your web page.

I have always said you should always write for your audience and not the search engines as they are the ones that actually pay you and keep your business alive. The search engines know this and that's why they keep changing their algorithm every other month. They want your text to be natural. If you are in one business or another hopefully you will naturally target your intended customers and if you optimize your website for that customer then you should connect when that customer searches for what you sell. That's the ideal situation.

So anyway, just what do you need to pay attention to?

Your keyword count. How many times is your target keyword coming up in the text. This is heavily linked to your keyword density which counts the percentage of your keywords over the total words in your text. You want to keep this around two percent and if you happen to get carried away or you struggle to keep it down just make sure it is not above 4%. Anymore would be considered keyword stuffing and could do more harm than good to your search engine position. A good thing to do here about your keyword density would be to sprinkle what we call LSI keywords or (Latent Semantic Indexing). This basically means that whenever you talk about your keywords or product there will be certain synonyms or related words that automatically come in as well. Let's use the example of someone selling red shoes and using that as their keyword. Naturally speaking there will be talk of shoe sizes, shoe types - are they trainers, high heels, combat boots and so on. Those are the type of words you want to include in your text. The quickest way to find these in relation to what people actually search for is to use Google's wonder wheel which shows the search phrases that are naturally related to your keyword. Use them.

Also try to keep your keywords towards the top of your text. Your keywords will have more weight at the top than somewhere at the bottom. It is just normal writing practice that when you write about something, that something is mentioned fairly early on in the piece. Anywhere else would appear as an afterthought as opposed to being the main topic of conversation.

And whatever happens please do not use same colour text to hide the fact that you have used a lot of your keyword in your text. Search engines do not like this and you could find yourself penalized or excluded altogether.

The SEO Gameplan - Your Title

The document or webpage title tag is one of the most important items for on-page optimization. This appears at the top of your page in the browser and is found between the and tags in the header of your page. It describes what your website is about and should contain your target keyword in it. In other words if you are selling red shoes and your target keyword is "red shoes" then your title should have that somewhere in it.

Just like your essays in school where your title told the reader what to expect in the document, your page title also tells the search engines what your page is about. Remember that search engine optimization is all about making sure your website or web pages are related to the keywords you target. By the same token, when search engines index your content they file them in by relevance to any keywords that maybe typed in when people search online. The title therefore tells the search engines where your page should be filed - to put it simply, and you want to make sure it is filed under your chosen keyword.

    Things to consider:

Your title must include your keyword but should also have a great call to action just so people click through to your website when they see your title on the search engine results page.

Try to make your title tag unique on each page and avoid keyword stuffing by putting a long title just to try and cover all the keywords you are after. Apart from search engine benefits, your title should also attract people to your website and a title of around 60 characters should be just about fine to ensure that it is all visible in the results page. There is no point saying something very witty when people will not see it.

The thing with unique titles for each page is automatic really. You may sell the red shoes described above but it is very likely and natural that not all your 57 pages on your website will be talking about red shoes. Whatever they are talking about is what goes in the title. This may sound like asking you to avoid using your keywords but it works because the content on the other pages will be related to your main keyword or line of business which helps in the search engines.

    Small Business SEO - Tips

My second article on small business SEO - promise this one I will keep it short and to the point. In this I have written seven really critical key points.

    1. Target right keywords - selection of right Keywords is important so that you can only target right products to right audience. Targeting wrong keywords, means you will end up on Google for wrong keywords and phrases. So I would say go back and revaluate your website keyword targeting. Another important thing is be localised and include location modifiers in your keyword building strategy, so that means - if your campaign's targeting local users then try to concentrate on that and include location on to your campaigns.

    2. Content: Again, the content you write on to your website should focus around main theme of your website. And importantly it should cater real users. The content you create should not only be built around keywords you're targeting, try to put - things like products articles, audio /videos, podcasts, etc.

    3. Without saying - link building strategy - it goes without saying how important it is to have good link building strategy to search engines, and pay close attention to details of link building as it no more the same as it used to be. So in short increase your website's popularity using different online or offline ways. Don't forget to use social component.

    4. Avoid Canonical links: try to stay away from canonical links (if you have any). It dilutes your website strength. For example http://www.example.com & http://example.com

should point it to one domain as search engines classify your website as two websites.

    5. Use of proper Image ALT Tags: properly use ALT tags for images/photos. Crawlers can't read images/photos, but obviously they can read text associated so try to use ALT tags as much as possible.

    6. Localisation: we all know about four square and Google Places now. And know benefits of using these new services. So try to use these services for your business. I would say register your business on Google places as Google include business on search results now.

    7. New Mobile era: well, if you know the growth of mobile space then you wouldn't want to leave this space, as this is one place where you might enter before your competitors - giving you better presence on all platforms. So make sure your website is mobile friendly.

Finally as I said earlier - to the point.

However, when you are looking for something more complex you should at least as for the advice of some specialists.

A great way to promote your site would be to start analyzing it first. When you do this you will be able to see what the downsides are and note them down. It is highly important that you be as honest as you can with yourself and note down everything that might seem out of place.

One of the most important tips of having a great website is to make it as accessible as possible and also user friendly. You will want to make the potential customers visit all or most of the pages of your site without any difficulties. If they do this you can be sure that they will end up buying something in the end.

Another great tip about search engine optimization campaigns is related to the SEO articles. Such articles are usually done by SEO copywriters but you can also do them themselves. For instance, you can write about the various products or services that you offer and then submit the article on various websites and blogs. These are just of few of the tips that might help your business become an online success. So, why don't you think about these possibilities some more?

The SEO Gameplan - Your Sitemap and Robots Text File

With SEO after you have done your on page optimization you MUST then get the website indexed or listed with the search engines. It must be indexed first before you can even start to think of ranking significantly. This is very important. While a lot of people focus on the main page or index page of the website you want to include all your pages so that you can spread your focus around your main keywords and other long tail keywords for your niche. You want to rank naturally instead of cramming everything up in one page.

The easiest way to tell the search engines about all your pages is to use a sitemap. This can come in a text (.txt) file, an html (.html) file or an XML (.xml) file. Most website hosts have scripts that automatically generates this sitemap for you and tells the search engines about all the inner pages on your website. This way you get to optimize your website and business by targetting each category in your shop or department based on different web pages to the search engines and avoid spamming by making your keyword the every-other-word in your text.

There are times when you do not want certain pages to show up in the search results either for privacy or for any other reason at all. You handle this by using the robots.txt file. This file basically tells the search engine spiders how to behave at your website, either to include or exclude certain pages in the crawl and index them. The primary use for this file is to direct the spiders to the sitemap so they get a list of all pages on the website for maximum exposure of your website. This is important because most people have a menu on their website homepage directing visitors to specific pages for certain products or categories. The sitemap helps those specific pages to rank in their own right as opposed to being a meer subpage when it actually talks about said product in more detail than your homepage.

Be sure to include these two files so you can get maximum visibility for your website.

Three Must-Know Easy Online Marketing Tips to Keep in Mind

Most businesses want to promote themselves on the internet. However it can often seem overwhelming with a lot of different options available. It is not always obvious what are the best ways to get people knowing about your company. 3 Online marketing tips in this article can help you get started.

The first tip is to look at your website. This is the central location of your internet promotion. What content you include in this depends on your target audience. The target audience for a monster truck rally will be different for tickets to the ballet. However, whoever you are aiming your business at the site should be simple to navigate and offer clear information.

A website should be clear and uncluttered. A simple drop down menu or sitemap can make it easy for people to look around the site and find what they need. You should also make sure that the site is written in a simple font and that the colour of the font does not clash with the background. For example red text on a black background is very hard to read.

You should also consider what type of website is relevant to your business. You may want a simple brochure style site to encourage people to visit your store or get in touch with you directly. These will have a minimal amount of pages and simply offer basic information and contact details. Alternatively you may want embedded videos, blogs and updated information. If you want people to buy products online, make sure they can complete transactions securely.

The second tip is to consider what marketing methods you use and how relevant they are to your target audience. For example a lot of people look online for local products and services. Therefore it may be best to look for local blogs and online magazines to promote yourselves. There are also often local business network groups and specialist social networking sites that may be suitable for your needs.

If it is not likely that your target audience will use a social network site then do not promote yourself that way. Article directories are a good way of getting more traffic to your website. An internet marketing company can help you write articles with the right keyword density.

The third of our 3 online marketing tips is to get the right advice. There are always new developments in internet marketing and you should always be open to what is available and how it can benefit you. A good way of doing this is getting in contact with companies in your local area. With the right approach you will get the most out of your business on the internet.

The Top 5 Ways to Improve Your WordPress Site's SEO

Although 'out of the box', WordPress is a very SEO-friendly and SEO-optimized CMS (content management system) and blogging platform, there are still a number of ways in which you can improve the on-site SEO characteristics of your WordPress website.

    1. Yoast's WordPress SEO Plugin. Install and configure this fantastic plugin written by famed WordPress developer Joost de Valk. WordPress SEO is actually a combination of some of Joost's older standalone plugins as well as some new functionality.

Apart from allowing you to specify HTML titles and meta descriptions for your posts, WordPress SEO lets you properly configure your Robots Meta data, generates XML sitemaps, cleans up your HTML section, adds breadcrumbs to posts and pages and more.

Alternatives to Joost's plugin include Headspace 2 and All-in-One-SEO, but neither do as much as this one plugin and the general wisdom is that the fewer plugins you have, the better.

    2. Urban Giraffe's Redirection Plugin. This plugin is used to manage your 301 redirects and keep track of your 404 errors. The former is necessary so that you maintain the URLs that were first indexed by the search engines and retain whatever page rank they had and provided to your other links.

404 (or Not Found) errors can spell disaster for a webmaster, and you should keep close track of these so that you can fix them or redirect the broken URLs quickly.

    3. Include Category Descriptions. To take advantage of additional search engine 'love', if your theme or some plugin does not include this functionality, include the following piece of code into the top of your category.php page: and edit each of your categories via the WordPress administrative interface to have a keyword-rich description.

Not only does this give your readers a better idea of what your category archive pages are about, but it also informs the search engines.

    4. Change Your Permalink Structure. Update the permalink structure (Settings -> Permalinks) and either choose or enter a custom structure that at a minimum includes the post's slug. For example: /%postname%/

This updates your URLs to include keywords (instead of just a number) that the search engines also like.

    5. Use a Caching Plugin. Although this was never an issue before 2010, site speed now matters to at least some search engines (Google in particular). So for this reason, use a caching plugin such as W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache. Both will speed up the site for your visitors.

Remember, that while these tips will go a long way to improving your site in the eyes of the search engines, you should still perform additional research to determine what other methods and techniques you should be using to SEO-optimize your WordPress website/blog.

The SEO Gameplan - Your URL or Domain Name

The SEO game is all about getting your site as relevant as possible to your target keyword. Search engines need to know that the results they spring up in point-something seconds are the right results and they do this by indexing websites by keywords and showing them when searches for thatkeyword are made. Naturally these results are graded based on relevance and other factors. Here we are talking about on page SEO so we will focus heavily on relevance.

So how does your domain name or URL affect this?

Let me ask you a question. If you saw two domains; redshoes.com and thatweirdguysname.com which of these would be targetting the keyword "red shoes"? Sorry to be simplistic here but the point is that one would be more inclined to tink that redshoes.com will be talking about or selling red shoes. The other website may also talk about red shoes but it already feels less relevant. At best it's probably owned by a chancer trying to sell everything under the sun and not the expert at red shoes. Remember the thing about SEO trying to be as natural as possible? Well it helps to have your domain showing your keyword in it. It indicates upfront the relevance of your site to the search engines. They will still need to crawl it and index it under the right keywords but it helps. There is a lot of debate on what kind of domain do you get;.com.net.info and so on but that's a whole other conversation altogether today lets focus on the keywords in your domain.

Search engines look at the keyword position in your domain, the number of words in the domain and the length of the domain itself. Try to use a reasonable length for your domain and avoid trying to say everything about your business in your dot com. If you have to go beyond a one word domain it is better to use hyphens (-) than underscores (_) mainly for visibility reasons and also word of mouth marketing for your business which makes your domain easier to remember.

Always do remember that if you make it a point to include your keyword in your domain just make sure it reads naturally instead of making a desperate inclusion of it.

Everyone wants to bite a chunk from the Internet. SEO services, SEO service providers, online marketing campaigns and so on, all of these are to catch commercial success from the Internet. All this madness started with the need of a backup system but once it started there was no stopping for the information networks.

The first long distance communication between two computer terminals was between Stanford Research Institute and University of California in 1969. First two letters of the word "LOG" was sent from one computer to the other and the system was crashed before the last letter. The inventors of this strange communication were not aware that these two letters would also be the first two letters of abbreviation for "laughing out loud" in the years to come. Long distance network communication using computers was developed further for military purposes. Scientists and academicians also used this communication media for their own projects. Starting from 1980's the use of computer networks, which were called internet works at the time, become unified and globalized.

The first search engines were indexing the titles of articles that were shared. They were not powerful software like their successors of today and they didn't need a lot of power because the number of documents was not a large one. As the number of documents grew search engines started to need real power for the needs of people using them. Not many people remember AltaVista now. When we came to 1990's, AltaVista was the most popular search engine. In 15 years from the launch of AltaVista everything about search engines and internet searching technologies changed. For example if we say that the hard disk capacity of AltaVista's indexer was only 500 MB, the extent of progress can be seen very easily.

In 15 years since AltaVista, many things changed. Now Google is sitting on the throne which was occupied by AltaVista not so many years ago and Google is using thousands of low cost computers for parallel processing the search strings presented by internet users bringing the results in less than half a second. Yahoo, the new owner of AltaVista, is considering "discontinuing" AltaVista. Long live the King!

Google is the first choice among Internet users as a search engine with an unbelievable 91% ratio. Therefore most of the search engine optimization efforts are strived on optimization for Google.
